Chai Hot Chocolate

A rich, spiced blend of cocoa and chai tea, lightly sweetened and finished with whipped cream for the ultimate cozy mug.

Chai Hot Chocolate: A Cozy, Spiced Cocoa

This Chai Hot Chocolate is basically two of my favorite winter drinks in one mug. Indian chai is hands-down my favorite kind of chai, and since I already reach for hot chocolate all winter long, combining the two seemed like an obvious move. Using chai tea bags keeps things easy while still giving you those cozy notes of cinnamon, cardamom, and ginger. I like to finish mine with a swirl of plant-based whipped cream and a little extra cinnamon on top — simple, comforting, and just the right size for slow sipping. Use a chai you love and adjust the spice level however you like.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Cozy winter mug vibes. Warm spices, rich cocoa, and whipped cream make this feel like a true comfort drink.
  • Quick and low-effort. Using chai tea bags keeps things simple without sacrificing flavor.
  • Customizable to your taste. Adjust the sweetness, spice level, or milk to make it your own.
  • Perfect single serving. Just enough to sip and enjoy without being overly heavy.
  • Naturally dairy-free. Easy to keep fully plant-based with your favorite plant milk and whipped topping.

Ingredient Highlight: Chai Tea

Chai is what gives this hot chocolate its depth and warmth. Traditional Indian chai (often called masala chai) is made with black tea and a blend of spices like cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and sometimes black pepper. In this recipe, chai tea bags make that complex flavor incredibly accessible. The key is using a chai you actually enjoy — some are spicier, some lean sweeter, and others are more tea-forward. Since the tea is brewed strong, those flavors really shine through once combined with cocoa and milk.

Madly Delicious Must-Know Tips & Questions

  • Brew the chai strong. Let the tea bags steep fully so the spices don’t get lost once the milk and cocoa are added.
  • Whisk the cocoa well. This helps prevent clumps and keeps the drink smooth and rich.
  • Don’t boil the milk. Gentle heat keeps the texture creamy and prevents scorching.
  • Sweeten gradually. Different chai blends vary in sweetness, so taste as you go.

Can I make this sweeter or less sweet?
Absolutely. Start with less sweetener and add more to taste — especially if your chai blend already has added spices or flavoring.

What plant milk works best?
Oat milk is extra creamy, almond keeps it lighter, and soy adds richness. Use whatever you normally love in hot drinks.

Can I add more spice?
Yes! Extra cinnamon, a pinch of ground cloves, or even fresh ginger will deepen the chai flavor.

Let’s Dish About Cocoa: Did You Know?

Cocoa has a long and fascinating history that goes way beyond hot chocolate. It comes from cacao beans, which were once so valued by ancient civilizations in Mesoamerica that they were used as currency. Traditionally, cacao was consumed as a bitter, spiced drink — often flavored with chilies or spices — long before sugar was ever added. Cocoa powder itself is made by pressing cacao beans to remove most of the fat, leaving behind an intensely flavored powder that delivers deep chocolate taste without sweetness. This is why cocoa pairs so naturally with warm spices like cinnamon, cardamom, and ginger — a combination that’s been around for centuries.

Equipment

  • Small saucepan

Ingredients

  • 2 chai tea bags
  • ½ cup water
  • cup plant milk of choice
  • 1 tbsp cacao or cocoa powder
  • 2-3 tsp sugar, maple syrup, or agave, to taste
  • Dash of cardamom
  • Dash of cinnamon
  • Dash of ground ginger

Optional Toppings

  • Whipped cream, plant-based (homemade or store-bought)
  • Dash of cinnamon

Instructions

  • Brew the chai tea: Steep 2 chai tea bags in ½ cup hot water for about 5 minutes to create a strong tea base.
  • Heat the milk: In a small saucepan, add ⅔ cup milk of choice and warm it over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Be careful not to let it boil.
  • Mix in the cocoa and spices: Once the milk is warm, whisk in 1 tbsp cacao or cocoa powder, 2-3 tsp sweetener of choice, and a dash of cardamom, cinnamon, and ground ginger.
  • Combine: Remove the chai tea bags from the brewed tea and pour the tea into the saucepan with the milk mixture. Whisk everything together until smooth and well combined.
  • Serve: Pour the chai hot chocolate into a mug.
  • Optional toppings: Add a dollop of whipped cream and a dash of cinnamon on top!

Notes

For convenience, you can steep the chai tea bags directly in the saucepan with the water. Simply bring ½ cup water to a simmer with the teabags, then remove the teabags after 5 minutes and whisk in the milk and remaining ingredients, gently heating it back up.
Customize your chai flavors
Try adding a real cardamom pod, star anise, or a splash of vanilla extract for extra depth. You can also toss in a small piece of fresh ginger for more warmth.
