Equipment

  • Small saucepan

Ingredients

  • 2 chai tea bags
  • ½ cup water
  • cup plant milk of choice
  • 1 tbsp cacao or cocoa powder
  • 2-3 tsp sugar, maple syrup, or agave, to taste
  • Dash of cardamom
  • Dash of cinnamon
  • Dash of ground ginger

Optional Toppings

  • Whipped cream, plant-based (homemade or store-bought)
  • Dash of cinnamon

Instructions

  • Brew the chai tea: Steep 2 chai tea bags in ½ cup hot water for about 5 minutes to create a strong tea base.
  • Heat the milk: In a small saucepan, add ⅔ cup milk of choice and warm it over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Be careful not to let it boil.
  • Mix in the cocoa and spices: Once the milk is warm, whisk in 1 tbsp cacao or cocoa powder, 2-3 tsp sweetener of choice, and a dash of cardamom, cinnamon, and ground ginger.
  • Combine: Remove the chai tea bags from the brewed tea and pour the tea into the saucepan with the milk mixture. Whisk everything together until smooth and well combined.
  • Serve: Pour the chai hot chocolate into a mug.
  • Optional toppings: Add a dollop of whipped cream and a dash of cinnamon on top!

Notes

For convenience, you can steep the chai tea bags directly in the saucepan with the water. Simply bring ½ cup water to a simmer with the teabags, then remove the teabags after 5 minutes and whisk in the milk and remaining ingredients, gently heating it back up.
Customize your chai flavors
Try adding a real cardamom pod, star anise, or a splash of vanilla extract for extra depth. You can also toss in a small piece of fresh ginger for more warmth.
Sweetener options
Use sugar, maple syrup, or agave based on your preference—adjust sweetness to taste.
