Valentine’s Chocolate-Covered Pretzels: A Simple Sweet for Gifting & Snacking

So while I was pondering what kind of recipes to make for the Valentine’s Day holiday coming up, I was out shopping for some dishes to use in my photographs and saw chocolate-covered pretzels by the register. I thought they’d be an easy and fun snack to make. I immediately ordered some Valentine’s Day sprinkles and got to work doing a test round. I almost 100% of the time use dark chocolate since that’s my preference, and once I dipped and decorated the pretzels, they were easy and so good. I’ll admit the first round looked like very young kids decorated them—I was in a rush and poured the sprinkles directly from the bottle, and they just didn’t look great, but the taste was there! The final round looked better, but maybe you’re better at decorating pretzels than I am. Valentine’s Chocolate-Covered Pretzels are proof that simple treats can still be fun and delicious.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Fun to make and decorate. This is one of those recipes where you can relax, play around with toppings, and not stress about perfection.
  • Quick and no-bake. Melt, dip, decorate, done. No oven required.
  • Sweet and salty. That dark chocolate + pretzel combo is hard to beat.
  • Great for gifting. Easy to package up and share for Valentine’s Day (or any occasion).

Ingredient Highlight: Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate can feel a little strong to some people, but I like using it here because it’s not overly sweet and balances the saltiness of the pretzels really well. It also happens to be dairy-free, which is a nice bonus. Dark chocolate melts smoothly, coats the pretzels easily, and keeps the flavors from tipping too sweet once the sprinkles are added. Since this recipe is so simple, choosing a chocolate you actually enjoy eating makes a big difference.

Madly Delicious Must-Know Tips & Questions

  • Decorate by hand: Sprinkling toppings on by hand instead of pouring straight from the container gives you more control and a cleaner finish.
  • Work in batches: If your chocolate starts to thicken, pause and gently reheat before continuing.
  • Pretzel shapes: Any pretzel works here, but flatter shapes make decorating a little easier.

Can I use milk or white chocolate?
Absolutely. Milk chocolate will be sweeter, while white chocolate gives you a fun blank canvas for colorful sprinkles.

Do these need to be refrigerated?
Not necessarily. They’ll keep fine at room temperature unless your kitchen is very warm.

How far ahead can I make them?
These are great made a day or two ahead, especially if you’re gifting or bringing them to a party.

Let’s Dish About Pretzels: Did You Know?

Pretzels are believed to have originated in Europe as early as the Middle Ages, with many stories tracing them back to monks who baked twisted bread as rewards for children who learned their prayers. The iconic knot shape is said to represent crossed arms, symbolizing prayer. Pretzels eventually made their way to the United States with German immigrants, where they became especially popular in Pennsylvania. Today, pretzels show up in everything from classic snacks to sweet treats like these chocolate-covered versions—and for the purpose of this recipe, I also like to think of pretzels as heart-shaped.

Equipment

  • Small bowl, for melting chocolate
  • Parchment paper lined platter or baking sheet

Ingredients

  • 30-40 small pretzels (I used pretzels that were about 2 inches x 2 inches)
  • 1 cup dark chocolate chips or chunks
  • 1 tsp coconut oil
  • Valentine's Day colored sprinkles (hearts, nonpareils, sanding sugar)
  • Optional: flaky sea salt

Instructions

  • Prep: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
  • Melt the Chocolate: Add 1 cup dark chocolate chips or chunks and 1 tsp coconut oil to a heatproof bowl. Melt using a double boiler over low heat, or microwave in 20–30 second intervals, stirring between each round until smooth and glossy.
  • Dip the Pretzels: Dip each pretzel halfway into the melted chocolate, allowing excess chocolate to drip back into the bowl. Place on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Decorate: While the chocolate is still wet, sprinkle with Valentine’s sprinkles. Add a light pinch of flaky sea salt if using.
  • Set: Refrigerate for 15-20 minutes until the chocolate is firm. Then remove and enjoy!

Notes

Pretzels
Feel free to use any pretzel shape or size; larger pretzels will naturally result in fewer pieces.
Melting chocolate
If the chocolate starts to thicken while dipping, gently reheat it in short bursts, stirring often to avoid overheating.
Switch up the sprinkles
Use different colors or shapes to match any holiday or occasion—these are easy to customize year-round.
Quick set
I like popping the pretzels in the fridge for 15–20 minutes to help the chocolate set quickly and evenly.
Storage
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days, or refrigerate if your kitchen runs warm.
