Strawberry Mezcalita

Strawberry Mezcalita: Sweet, Smoky Perfection

I was introduced to mezcal in Mexico, sipping passion fruit mezcalitas on the beach while the waves rolled in. I even did a tasting in Puerto Escondido and totally fell in love. I’ve never been big on tequila, but mezcal is smoky, earthy, and has this depth that’s hard to resist.

For this Strawberry Mezcalita, I wanted to let that flavor shine with sweet, juicy strawberries—my little nod to summer. I rimmed the glass with chili lime salt, but Tajín works just as well for that classic kick. Sip it in the sun and enjoy a taste of Mexico.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

Naturally Gluten-Free & Dairy-Free: A vibrant option for anyone with dietary preferences.

Sweet Meets Smoky: The combination of juicy strawberries and earthy mezcal creates a cocktail that’s balanced and unforgettable.

Mexican-Inspired Flavor: Chili lime salt and fresh lime juice bring the perfect tangy kick to this drink.

Ingredient Highlight: Mezcal

Mezcal gets its signature smoky flavor from roasting agave in underground pits—a process that sets it apart from tequila. While tequila’s made from blue agave, mezcal can come from a variety of agave plants, which gives it that earthy, complex vibe. It’s bold, a little mysterious, and brings so much character to a cocktail.

Madly Delicious Must-Know Tips and Questions

  • Adjust the Sweetness: If you prefer a sweeter cocktail, simply add more agave syrup to taste.
  • Strawberries: Muddle or Blend: For a smoother texture, blend the strawberries with water as the recipe suggests. If you prefer a more rustic cocktail with bits of fruit, gently muddle the strawberries instead.
  • Chili Lime Rim: Elevate the flavors by rimming your glass with chili lime salt or Tajín. To make it stick, moisten the rim with a lime wedge before dipping.

Can I use frozen strawberries?
Yes, thawed frozen strawberries can be used if fresh ones are unavailable. They may be slightly softer but will still provide great flavor.

What if I don’t have a cocktail shaker?
You can use a mason jar with a tight-fitting lid as an alternative to a cocktail shaker.

Is there a substitute for mezcal?
If you prefer a less smoky flavor, you can substitute mezcal with tequila. However, the unique smokiness of mezcal is a key characteristic of this cocktail.

How can I make a non-alcoholic version?
For a mocktail, replace the mezcal with sparkling water or a non-alcoholic spirit that mimics the smoky flavor of mezcal.

Where can I find chili lime salt or Tajín?
These seasonings are commonly available in the international aisle of grocery stores, Trader Joes, specialty spice shops, or online retailers.

Let’s Dish: Did You Know?

Mezcal has deep roots in Mexican history, dating back centuries to Oaxaca. The word mezcal comes from the Nahuatl term mexcalli, meaning “oven-cooked agave”—a nod to the traditional method of roasting agave hearts in underground pits lined with hot stones. It’s this time-honored process that gives mezcal its signature smoky flavor. More than just technique, it’s a craft passed down through generations—bold, earthy, and full of soul.
