New York Sour: The Whiskey Cocktail with a Red Wine Twist

The New York Sour has always been my favorite cocktail. I love how the red wine layers with the bourbon and lemon, creating that sweet-tart balance that feels both refreshing and indulgent. I don’t drink much these days, but if I’m having a cocktail, this is always my pick. Funny enough, I wasn’t introduced to it while living in New York City — it actually happened right after, during a stop in Atlanta. One sip and I couldn’t believe I’d never come across it in New York! Either way, it’s become my go-to for the holidays or anytime there’s a little red wine left in the bottle that deserves a second life.

Why You’ll Love This Cocktail

Elegant and balanced: The mix of bourbon, lemon, and red wine creates a sweet-tart harmony that feels sophisticated and smooth.

Visually stunning: That layered red wine float gives it the most beautiful, moody presentation — perfect for holiday entertaining.

Surprisingly simple: Just a few ingredients and a quick shake — no fancy bar tools or syrups required.

Perfect for using leftover wine: It’s a creative (and delicious) way to use up that last splash of red from dinner.

Ingredient Highlight: Bourbon

The heart of any New York Sour is a smooth, flavorful bourbon. It brings warmth, depth, and a subtle sweetness that ties everything together. Look for a bourbon with caramel, vanilla, or spice notes — those flavors pair beautifully with the tart lemon and rich red wine float. Since the cocktail is only lightly sweetened, the bourbon’s personality really shines, giving the drink that luxurious balance of spirit, citrus, and silk.

Madly Delicious Must-Know Tips and Questions

Pick the Right Red: A dry, full-bodied red works best — try Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, or Malbec for a rich, berry-forward layer.

Shake It Well: Don’t rush the shake! A solid 15–20 seconds ensures the bourbon and lemon juice blend smoothly for the perfect base.

Serve Immediately: This cocktail is all about contrast — the crisp chill of the sour with the warm hue of the red wine on top. Serve right away to keep that layered look intact.

Can I make it vegan-friendly?
Absolutely! This version already is. Some traditional recipes include egg white, but I skip it for a lighter texture — and if you love foam, aquafaba is a great vegan alternative.

Let’s Dish: Did You Know?

Despite its name, the New York Sour didn’t actually originate in New York at all. Most cocktail historians trace it back to Chicago in the late 1800s, where bartenders began floating red wine over the classic whiskey sour to impress their guests. Originally known as the Continental Sour, the drink’s elegant two-tone look and refined flavor quickly caught on. By the time it made its way to New York’s cocktail bars, the name had shifted — but the charm remained. More than a century later, it’s still celebrated as one of the most sophisticated twists on a classic sour, proving that a little creativity (and a splash of red wine) never go out of style. 🥃

Notes

Traditionally, a whiskey sour includes egg white for a silky foam, but I prefer my New York Sour without — it keeps the flavor crisp and the layers beautifully distinct.
