Equipment

  • Blender

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsweetened, plain plant-based yogurt (avoid Greek-style yogurt)
  • 1 ½ cups frozen blueberries (if using fresh, add 3-4 ice cubes)
  • 1 tsp ground cardamom
  • ½ cup water (adjust for consistency)
  • 2-3 tbsp honey or agave
  • tsp rose water (optional; skip if you dislike the flavor)

Instructions

  • Blend Ingredients: In a blender, combine 1 cup unsweetened plain yogurt, 1½ cups frozen blueberries, 1 tsp ground cardamom, ½ cup water, and 2-3 tbsp honey or agave. If using fresh blueberries, add 3-4 ice cubes for a chilled texture.
  • Adjust Consistency: Blend until smooth and creamy. If the lassi is too thick, add a little more water and blend again until you reach your desired consistency.
  • Add Optional Flavor: If using, add ⅛ tsp rose water, blending briefly to incorporate.
  • Serve: Pour into glasses and enjoy immediately. For an extra refreshing touch, garnish with a sprinkle of ground cardamom or a few fresh blueberries on top.

Notes

Yogurt Alternative
If you prefer a tangier lassi, you can use kefir instead of yogurt for a probiotic boost.
Make It Extra Creamy
Blend in ¼ of a banana for a richer, creamier texture without altering the flavor too much.
Spice It Up
For added depth, try a pinch of ground cinnamon or nutmeg alongside the cardamom.
Storage Tip
Lassi is best enjoyed fresh, but if needed, store it in the fridge for up to 24 hours in an airtight container. Shake or blend again before serving.

Blueberry Lassi

Blueberry Lassi: A Fruity Twist on a Classic Indian Drink

I’ve always loved the classic mango lassi, but the idea for this Blueberry Lassi came from an unexpected moment at Aspen Food & Wine! I was there helping someone who was working the event when I saw celebrity chef Maneet Chauhan making a mango lassi. Someone in the crowd asked, “Do you always have to use mango?” and she immediately said, “Absolutely not!” That got me thinking—the lassi isn’t about the fruit, it’s about the method: a yogurt base blended with cardamom (and a touch of rose water, if that’s your jam). I decided to give blueberries a go, and the result was a tangy, creamy, and lightly spiced lassi that’s super refreshing. It’s definitely yogurty—but in the best way!

What is a Lassi?

Lassi is a traditional Indian yogurt-based drink that can be sweet or savory. The base is always yogurt blended with water or milk to create a smooth, drinkable consistency. Depending on the style, it can be flavored in different ways:

  • Sweet Lassi – Made with sugar or honey, sometimes flavored with cardamom, saffron, or rose water, and often blended with fruit like mango, banana, or berries.
  • Savory Lassi – Made with salt, cumin, and sometimes mint for a cooling, tangy drink often enjoyed alongside spicy Indian dishes.

No matter the variation, lassi is creamy, cooling, and packed with probiotics, making it the perfect refresher on a hot day!

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

Simple & Quick – Just toss everything in a blender and you’re done in 5 minutes!

Refreshing & Cooling – The perfect balance of creamy yogurt and fruity blueberries, with a hint of warm cardamom spice.

Naturally Sweetened – Uses honey or agave instead of refined sugar.

Customizable – You can adjust the sweetness, consistency, and flavors to your taste.

Ingredient Highlight: Cardamom

Cardamom is a warm, aromatic spice that’s often used in Indian and Middle Eastern cuisine. It has a slightly citrusy, herbal, and floral flavor that pairs beautifully with fruity and creamy ingredients. In this lassi, it enhances the blueberries’ sweetness while adding a subtle spiced note.

Madly Delicious Must-Know Tips & Questions

  • Blend for Extra Frothiness – If you want a light, airy texture, blend on high for an extra 30 seconds to aerate the lassi.
  • Chill Your Ingredients – For the best flavor, use cold yogurt and frozen blueberries so you don’t have to add extra ice.
  • Adjust Sweetness to Taste – Blueberries vary in sweetness, so start with 2 tbsp honey or agave and add more if needed.
  • Skip the Rose Water? – If you’re unsure about rose water, try just a drop first. It adds floral notes but can easily overpower the drink.
  • Add a Protein Boost – For extra protein, blend in a scoop of vanilla protein powder or a tablespoon of chia seeds.

Can I use fresh blueberries instead of frozen?
Yes! Just add 3–4 ice cubes to keep it chilled and thick.

What’s the best yogurt to use?
Stick to plain, unsweetened yogurt (dairy or plant-based). Avoid Greek yogurt, as it’s too thick and tangy.

How can I make it extra creamy?
Blend in ¼ of a banana for a thicker, smoother texture.

Can I store lassi for later?
It’s best enjoyed fresh, but you can refrigerate it for up to 24 hours in an airtight container. Shake or blend before drinking.

Let’s Dish: Did You Know?

Lassi has been enjoyed in India for over 1,000 years! It was originally used as a cooling drink to help balance the body’s heat, especially in warm climates. In Ayurveda, lassi is believed to aid digestion and promote gut health, thanks to its probiotics.
