BBQ Grilled Corn on the Cob

BBQ Grilled Corn on the Cob: Sweet, Saucy, and Summer-Ready

I came up with BBQ Grilled Corn on the Cob years ago, during this one summer in college when I was obsessed with barbecue sauce—like, I put it on everything: burgers, mac and cheese, veggies, you name it. That’s where this idea was born. You just peel back the husks, slather on whatever BBQ sauce you have, then fold the husks back and toss the corn on the grill. It’s the perfect combo of steaming and grilling, letting the sauce really soak in and caramelize. After 15–20 minutes, you’ve got sweet, smoky, saucy corn that’s way more fun than plain cobs. Give it a go—it’s an easy upgrade for any summer cookout.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

Only 2 ingredients! – Corn and BBQ sauce are all you need.

Naturally vegan and gluten-free – Just check your BBQ sauce label.

No foil or extra tools – The husks do all the work for you.

Big flavor, no mess – The sauce caramelizes right inside the husk.

Perfect for summer – Great for cookouts, BBQs, or weeknight grilling.

Ingredient Highlight: Corn on the Cob

Summer corn is sweet, juicy, and made for the grill. Keeping it in the husk helps protect the kernels and gives it a steamed-meets-smoky finish. Whether you’re grabbing from the farmer’s market or grocery store, fresh ears make a huge difference—just peel back those husks, clean off the silks, and you’re ready to go.

Madly Delicious Must-Know Tips and Questions

Grill with the husks on:
This keeps the corn from drying out and lets the BBQ sauce soak in while everything grills together.

Rotate during grilling:
Turn every 5 minutes or so for even cooking and slight charring on the husks.

Use your favorite BBQ sauce:
Sweet, smoky, spicy—it’s all fair game. Homemade or store-bought both work.

Want extra saucy corn?
Once grilled, peel off the husks and brush with more sauce before serving.

Can I make this without a grill?
Yes! Use a grill pan on the stovetop.

How do I know the corn is done?
The husks will look charred and the kernels should be tender when pierced with a knife or fork.

Can I prep ahead?
Totally—clean and sauce your corn ahead of time, then toss on the grill when ready.

Let’s Dish: Did You Know?

Grilling corn in its husks is a centuries-old technique used by Native American communities to keep the kernels juicy while adding smoky depth. The husks trap steam and protect the corn as it cooks—plus, they make the perfect natural wrap for locking in extra flavor, like tangy BBQ sauce.

Equipment

  • Grill or griddle

Ingredients

  • 2 ears of corn, in their husk
  • ¼ cup bbq sauce of choice

Instructions

  • Preheat Your Grill or Griddle: Heat to medium-high heat (about 400°F) and allow it to come to temperature.
  • Prep the Corn: Peel back the husks (but don’t remove them completely), and remove all the silks. Clean the corn, then brush generously with BBQ sauce.
  • Wrap It Up: Fold the husks back over the corn to cover. This helps steam the corn while cooking it.
  • Grill: Place the wrapped corn directly on a hot grill or griddle. Grill for 15–20 minutes, turning occasionally so it cooks evenly. Close the lid if using a grill with one. The husks will char slightly—don’t worry, that’s part of the process!
  • Serve: Carefully remove the corn from the grill, peel back or discard the husks, and serve hot. Add an extra brush of BBQ sauce if you’d like.

Notes

Choose your BBQ sauce
Sweet, smoky, spicy—it’s all fair game. Use your favorite store-bought or homemade BBQ sauce to switch up the flavor profile.
Vegan-friendly
Most BBQ sauces are vegan, but double-check the label if needed.
No grill? No problem!
Use a grill pan or hot cast iron skillet on the stovetop—just rotate and cover with a lid to mimic the steaming effect.
Serving tip
For extra flavor, brush with a bit more BBQ sauce after grilling or add a sprinkle of chili powder or fresh herbs.
